Vernon Eugene Thompson, Sr.,78, of Overton, Nebraska, passed away on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at the CHI Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
He was born on December 30, 1946, in Savannah, Missouri, to Verne Washington and Beulah Fern (Ulmer) Thompson. The family moved to Malvern, Iowa where Vernon attended school and graduated from Malvern High School with the class of 1964. Shortly after graduation, Vernon joined the United States Army where he proudly served his country in Vietnam. He was united in marriage to Jennie Mae Huffaker on January 5, 1974, in Omaha. To this union two children were born, Vernon, Jr. and Angela.
The couple moved to Elm Creek for a brief time and later made their home in Overton in 1982. Vernon was an incredibly hardworking man, dedicating over thirty years to Midlands Contracting, Inc. until his retirement. He couldn't stay still for too long and began working for Cook Construction as well. Vernon was a member of the Pony Express Ramrodders and often took part in the Muzzleloader Rendezvous Black Powder Shooter.
Vernon loved being outdoors, spending hours fishing or camping. He was known as a bit of a jokester and liked pulling jokes on people, making them laugh and never missed a Wednesday night with his boys. He had a great love for his wife and family and always held a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He survived by his son; Vernon, Jr. and wife Carrie of Overton, daughter; Angela and husband Ricki Runge of Overton, four grandchildren; Hailey and husband Jon Lyman of Seymour, Missouri, Cody Runge, Riley Runge and Casey Runge all of Elm Creek; great-grandchildren, Oaklyn Lyman and Sybil Lyman, both of Seymour, Missouri; as well as extended family and many friends.
Besides his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie Thompson and brother, John William Thompson.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington with Pastor Rex Adams officiating.
There will be a luncheon following the graveside service at the Overton Family Center in Overton.
A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held after the service at Overton Cemetery in Overton.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, from 5-7 p.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington.
