Shirley Ann Schoenrock

December 4, 1932 — April 30, 2025

Wahoo

Shirley Ann Schoenrock, 92, of Wahoo, Nebraska, formerly of Callaway, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2025 at Saunders Medical Center and Long Care surrounded by her loving family.

Shirley was born December 4, 1932 and was raised by Lester and Malinda Hummel with four siblings, Horace (Ruth) Hummel, Roslyn (Sam) Nietfeldt, Rachel (Stan) Peters, and Kent (Joanie) Hummel of Daykin, Nebraska.

She graduated from Western High School and attended one year of college where after she served as a LPN for the Beatrice Hospital. She married Ted Schoenrock March 4, 1951 and they had five children: Jim (Lana) Schoenrock of Franklin, Nebraska; Patricia Matthies of Lincoln, Nebraska; Susan (David) Fivecoat of Athens, Georgia; Terri (David) Snodgrass of Clayton, Indiana, and John (Kamen) Schoenrock of Rising City, Nebraska.

Shirley followed her husband’s job to Indiana where she served as administrator for the Hendricks County Home in Danville, IN. While in Indiana, she became a foster mom to over 30 children. She would later serve as a school paraprofessional and even a Boy Scout den leader. In 1985, Ted and Shirley moved back to Nebraska where they made Callaway their home. Shirley loved gardening, especially flowers, animals, knitting, reading, polka music, and above all, her “kids”. While in Callaway, she opened Grandma’s Tots Daycare Center where she became known as Grandma Shirley to the entire community. Dozens of children came through her doors and would still call or visit her years later.

In her later years, she moved to Saunders LTC in Wahoo where she enjoyed many activities that included card playing, crafts, and piloting the pontoon boat on Lake Wanahoo. She was dearly loved by the staff and fellow residents because of her ornery, yet still nurturing, nature. She was very active and enjoyed playfully teasing the staff of Saunders.

She is survived by her brother, Kent of Daykin, her 5 children, 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and many close friends. Shirley is preceded in death by her husband Ted Schoenrock; her brother, Horace Hummel; sisters Glenda Naegele, Rosy Nietfeldt, and Rachel Peters, and sister-in-law Elfriede Klein; and daughter Pamela and great granddaughter, Ava Rinehart.
