He was born on July 6, 1960, in Minden, Nebraska, to LaVern and Glenna (Johnson) Zern. He attended Minden Public Schools and graduated from Minden High School with the class of 1979. He also enjoyed spending time with his wife, going out to restaurants and traveling to different lakes across the United States.

He was preceded in death by his parents, LaVern Zern and Glenna Craig and his stepfather, John Craig.
