Lorraine Elizabeth (Wiegand) Smith, 97, of Callaway, Nebraska passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at the Callaway District Hospital. Lorraine was born in Kearney, Nebraska, on August 8, 1921 to Gertrude (Erpelding) and Aloysious Wiegand. She graduated from Longfellow High School in Kearney which is now Kearney High School with the class of 1938. She married Fred V Smith on February 18, 1947 and resided in Kearney, Nebraska. Lorraine always wished she had attended college and made it her life’s ambition to assure her four children were able to attend college. She was always good with numbers and was an excellent typist and many of her jobs in Callaway included using those two skills. She worked for Loup Valley Queen where she ran a linotype machine, Callaway Courier, and 19 years as secretary at the Callaway Public School. She loved genealogy. This love translated into her interest in the land around Callaway, “the land of the Seven Valleys”. She wrote two books about this amazing area. She also did lots of research into both sides of the family. Any questions about ancestors could be directed to her and if she didn’t know the answer it was somewhere in her research. She got the Good Neighbor Citation AK-SAR-BEN in May 1982, in 1997 she received the First Ladies award for outstanding Community service signed by Diane Nelson, first lady of Nebraska, and she was a 40-year member of the Legion Auxiliary. During her married life Fred and Lorraine lived in Kearney before moving to Murphy Table outside of Callaway in 1952 where her husband farmed. In 1955, they moved onto an acreage at the edge of Callaway. She and Fred raised four children. Three of which, today, reside in Callaway. Lorraine was the first woman to serve on the Callaway School Board, instrumental in the building of the swimming pool, and the founder and curator of the Seven Valley’s Museum. Lorraine was a dedicated, loving wife and mother, she intertwined both her love of family and love of community service into a very successful and fulfilling life.
