Leonard Joseph Schinzel, 84, of Lexington, Nebraska passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2026 at Ridgeway Senior Living in Lexington.
Leonard was born on November 14, 1941, in Kearney, Nebraska to Frank and Regina (Reisdorff) Schinzel. Leonard attended public schools in Lexington and graduated from Lexington High School with the class of 1960. While in High School, he worked at Texaco on Highway 30. Following High School, Leonard enlisted in the United States Army National Guard on November 11, 1963. He served 6 years and was honorably discharged on November 10, 1969.
Leonard would live his entire life in Lexington, giving special attention to taking care of his parents. He worked for Nebraska Natural Gas for 25 years, Sperry New Holland for 15 years and Walmart for 10 years. Following his retirement, he contributed many hours at St. Ann's Catholic Church. He opened the church for Father and helped out whenever needed. His faith was extremely important to him, with a special love for the Rosary.
Leonard enjoyed hunting and fishing. His generosity in spirit was helping others, especially his neighbors and others in the community.
He was a past member of the Jaycee's and member of the American Legion in Lexington.
Throughout his life, Leonard was marked by a steadfast sense of integrity and commitment to everything he pursued. From his Nebraska roots, he grew into a person recognized for his dedication and principled approach both personally and professionally. The community remembers him as someone who held true to his values and quietly contributed to those around him.
He will be remembered with admiration and gratitude by all who knew and encountered him.
Survivors include his siblings, Don Schinzel of Omaha; Mary Ann Wilkinson of Des Moines, Iowa, and Luanne (Trudy Portewig) Schinzel of Catonsville, Maryland; sister-in-law, Lucille Schinzel; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Besides his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by his sisters, Kay (Art) Hafeman and Betty (Royce) Dilsaver; brothers, Bernard (Mary Ann) Schinzel and Jerome Schinzel; sister-in-law, Sue Schinzel and brother-in-law, Dick Wilkinson.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, July 16, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington with Father Jose Chavez, officiating. The Mass will be live-streamed via the Reynolds-Love Funeral Home Facebook page.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2026 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. with a Rosary to follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church.
Interment with Military Honors will be at St. Ann's Cemetery in Lexington following the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are kindly suggested to the St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington.
