June Marie Shubert

November 2, 1934 — March 21, 2019

June Marie McCready Shubert, 84, died March 21st, 2019 at Avamere Assisted Living in Lexington, NE. She was born on November 2nd, 1934, in Kearney, Nebraska to Nellie Marie (Kincaid) and Cecil Virette McCready. June attended school in Kearney, graduating from Kearney High School in the class of 1952. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Kearney State College. As a child, June loved playing with the family cats and dogs, spending time with her best friend who lived next door, making dolls from hollyhocks, learning to sew, and roller skating. She was raised mostly by her grandparents, Jennie and Jake Mutchie. After her grandpa’s death, she helped her grandma prepare and serve Sunday dinners in their home for members of the community. June taught 2nd grade at Prescott Elementary in Lincoln for 2 years. She then married Gary F. Shubert of Elm Creek on April 16th, 1960. They had three children, Melanie, Brandon and Tad. June and Gary lived and taught in Marquette and Sutton before moving back to Kearney to be closer to June’s grandma in 1966. In 1969, June and Gary moved the family to a place on the Platte river. What started as a tiny 2 bedroom concrete block house turned into a big, wonderful house that Gary worked off and on for, what seemed to June, like forever. That home became the place to be for family and friends of all ages. June continued to live there after Gary’s death until March of 2018 when her health took a turn for the worse. June was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Lexington for nearly 50 years and enjoyed playing bells in the Cathedral Bell Choir for more than 25 years. She was a Cub Scout and Webelos leader, a 4-H leader, member of DeMolay Mother's Club, member of P.E.O. Chapter FS, and one of the founders and board members of Club 180 in Lexington. She loved animals, and raised and cared for many cats and dogs over the years (as well as one raccoon and a baby deer). She enjoyed gardening, and feeding and watching birds. She kept binoculars near the window to get a closer look at birds and butterflies. When not outside, she spent her time with family and friends, working on crosswords and reading mysteries. Her dry humor, pithy sayings and love for bad puns will all be deeply missed. Teaching was a lifelong love for June. She taught many different age groups and ability levels, particularly being patient with any students who struggled. After substitute teaching for Lexington Public Schools for a number of years, she went back to full time teaching in the Title program which helped helped students work up to their full potential. June fully believed that education and background knowledge of the world could change a life. June was extremely fond of music. She grew up playing the piano and violin and enjoyed the many musical activities her children and grandchildren participated in. She especially loved watching her grandchildren in sports and music, trying to never miss an activity. June will be greatly missed by her friends and survivors: Daughter Melanie Shubert of Lexington and Mike Wright of Johnson Lake; Sons: Brandon and wife, Stefanie of Lincoln; and Tad and Mary Hagarty, of Lincoln; grandchildren: Will Morgan and fiance, Liz Gebhardt, Mary Jane Morgan, Sam Morgan, and Reid Shubert. She is also survived by several extended family members, and many beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, and husband, Gary F. Shubert. A Memorial service will be held Friday, March 29, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington with Pastor Rex Adams, officiating Memorials are suggested to the June Shubert Teaching Scholarship.
