Dorothy Anne "Dottie" Bentley

August 17, 1927 — December 22, 2020

Dorothy Anne “Dottie” Bentley, 93, of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at her cabin on Johnson Lake.

She was born on August 17, 1927, in Indian Mound, Tennessee to Samuel and Annie (Adams) Slaughter. Dottie was baptized in the Methodist Church in Steward County, Tennessee.  While growing up in Tennessee, Dottie worked various jobs in Clarksville. One of these jobs, working at the Pullman Restaurant happened to be where she met the love of her life, Roy Bentley.

Roy was stationed at Fort (Camp) Campbell, Kentucky in the 11th Airborne, Army.  They were united in marriage on October 17, 1950, in Clarksville, Tennessee at the Church of Christ.  One daughter was blessed to this union: Jana.

They permanently moved to Gothenburg, Nebraska in 1954 to a farmstead northeast of Gothenburg. Dottie briefly worked at the Slack Nursing Home as a hairdresser.  She mostly worked on the family farm helping where Roy was needed.  They moved to Lexington in 1983 to be closer to Roy’s mother and take care of the homestead Ranch north of Overton, after his father passed.

Dottie loved shopping for a good bargain and visiting with retailers at their shops. She enjoyed coffee with friends in her home or downtown Lexington.  Roy and Dottie looked forward to good music and dancing on Saturday nights, they also loved car trips and bus trips to visit new places.  It was very important to Dottie to make a trip back to Tennessee and Alabama to visit family once or twice a year.  They purchased a cabin on Johnson Lake and spent the next forty four summers enjoying boat rides and watching beautiful sunsets.

Dottie’s wish was to live her last days at her cabin while being on hospice. The family would like to give a special thank you to Deb Werger and Megan Briseno for helping fulfill that wish.

Dottie is survived by her husband of seventy years, Roy of Lexington; her daughter, Jana Dee (Jon) Ivey of Johnson Lake; sister-in-law, Sara Slaughter of Arab, Alabama; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Sammie (Gene) Buchanan of Indian Mound, Tennessee, Lorene (Jim) Gregg of Indian Mound, Tennessee and Maxine (Buddy) McElwain of Austin, Texas; brothers, John (Wilda) Slaughter of Clarksville, Tennessee and James Slaughter of Arab, Alabama.
