Dale A. Burkhalter, 79, of Elwood, Nebraska, passed away on Monday, June 17, 2019 at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg. He was born October 4, 1939 in Adams County, Iowa to Arthur and Merle (Bunting) Burkhalter. Dale grew up in Adams County, Iowa where he graduated as Salutatorian with the class of 1958. He then moved to Lexington, Nebraska where he worked with his Uncles land-tiling and he also started farming for Jim Larsen. He was drafted in the United States Army on January 4, 1962. Dale was a paratrooper while serving his country and was honorably discharged on December 23, 1964. In May of 1965, Dale met the love of his life at District 15 School picnic and was united in marriage to Marilyn Elliott on June 5, 1966 at the First United Methodist Church in Lexington. Four children were blessed to this union: Phillip, David, Andrew and Sarah. In 1967, Dale started working for the Bellamy Brothers as a mechanic and spent the next 46 years working at the Implement making friends and doing what he loved. In 1974, Dale and Marilyn bought a farm south of Elwood where they farmed and would reside until just recently moving to Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg. The Lord was very important to Dale, his animals and of course his grandchildren which he adored. In his younger years, Dale received his Pilot’s license and enjoyed flying for many years. Survivors include his loving wife, Marilyn of Elwood, Nebraska; three sons, Phillip (Sharilyn) Burkhalter of Johnson Lake, Nebraska, David (Fabienne) Burkhalter of Elsie, Nebraska and Andrew (Frances) Burkhalter of Scottsbluff, Nebraska; one daughter, Sarah (Michael) Anderson of Gothenburg, Nebraska; eleven grandchildren and one great-grandson; two brothers, Harold Burkhalter of Steamboat Springs, Colorado and Loren (Lucinda) Burkhalter of Chariton, Iowa; two sisters, Lela Burkhalter of Creston, Iowa and Mary Louise Edwards of Greenwood, Arkansas; sister-in-law, Phyllis Burkhalter of Creston, Iowa; brother and sister-in-law, Gale (Sharon) Elliott of Tucson, Arizona; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, father and mother-in-law, Gerald and Doris Elliott; brother, Earl and brother-in-law, Paul Edwards. Funeral Services will be on Friday, June 21, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Elwood Methodist Church with Pastor Soonil Park, officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2019 from 5-7 p.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska at 2:30 p.m. with Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to Elwood Methodist Church.
