Gladys M. Conroy, 82, of Oconto, Nebraska, passed away Sunday, October 1, 2017, at Mother Hull Home in Kearney. Gladys was born January 28, 1935, in Gothenburg, Nebraska, to Victor and Lena (Streeton) McGaughey. The family moved to Oconto in 1942. She attended school in Oconto, graduating in 1952. After school she moved to Omaha where she worked at Mutual of Omaha until 1955. She was united in marriage to John Conroy on May 7, 1955, in Oconto. The couple was blessed with five children; Janet, Jeanette, Greg, Susan, and Cheryl. In 1974, Gladys gained employment with Sumner High School as a custodian. She retired in 1999. She loved being with the kids during her working years at the school. Gladys was a loving wife, mother, and beloved grandmother who enjoyed sewing, was an excellent cook, baker, gardener, and loved visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also active in the Oconto American Legion Auxiliary and St. Patrick’s Altar Society in Eddyville. Gladys is survived by her husband of 62 years, John Conroy of Oconto, Nebraska; her children, Janet (Max) Adams of Norfolk, Nebraska; Jeanette Cronin of Kearney, Nebraska, Greg (Cyndi) Conroy of Pender, Nebraska, Susan (David) Watts of Lincoln, Nebraska, Cheryl (Tom) Ludvik of Wahoo, Nebraska; one sister, Bert Conroy of Hazel Green, Wisconsin; eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, with one on the way; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, October 5, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oconto, Nebraska with Reverend James Hunt celebrating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery at Eddyville, Nebraska. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 4, 2017, from 4-6 p.m. with Rosary being recited at 6:00 p.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington. Memorials are suggested to the Oconto Fire Department or the Oconto American Legion Auxiliary, Post #250.
