Delbert E. Leigh, 88, of Broken Bow, Nebraska, died Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Harlan County Health System in Alma, Nebraska. Delbert was born June 8, 1928, in Callaway, Nebraska to John & Ella (Dickman) Leigh. He was the last born of eight children at their home. Delbert was raised on the family farm and graduated from Callaway High School with the class of 1945. Following high school, Delbert was enlisted into the United States Army. While serving in the Army he was stationed in Fort Monmouth in New York and Fort Huachuca in Arizona. He served his country from 1953, until the spring on 1955, when he was honorable discharged. Delbert was united in marriage to Alma Wright on June 13, 1953, in Henderson, Kentucky. One child was blessed to this marriage; Diane. He and Alma lived in Phoenix, Arizona after leaving the service where he attended Barber School. In the spring of 1959, they moved to Broken Bow, Nebraska, where he opened up his own Barber Shop. Delbert operated this shop for 58 years before semi-retiring. Over the years, Delbert established many friends and never knew a stranger. He always enjoyed people and had a great sense of humor. Delbert enjoyed trap shooting and hunting, especially pheasants. As a young boy his mother often took him to the trap shoots where he always won a prize. He also liked to play cards and teach card tricks. He and Alma also enjoyed camping, traveling and collecting rocks on their road trips. He was a member of the Elk’s Lodge in Broken Bow for over 50 years, a member of the Cosmopolitan Board, Board of Adjustment in Broken Bow, former board member of the Pioneer Senior Center and belonged to Pheasant’s Forever. Delbert was a member of the First Christian Church in Broken Bow. Survivors include his wife Alma Leigh of Broken Bow, Nebraska; daughter, Diane (Don) Fegter of Republican City, Nebraska; three grandchildren, Scott (Julia) Fegter of Omaha, Nebraska, Erik (Shannon) Fegter of Lincoln, Nebraska and Stefanie (Kory) Staab of Lincoln, Nebraska; three great-grandchildren, Grace and Carter Fegter, and Dru Staab; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends. Delbert was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Callaway, Nebraska, with Pastor Dave Irwin & Shanon Williams, officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 28, 2017, from 6-7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Callaway. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Callaway. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation. Timm-Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Callaway is assisting the family with arrangements.
