Julie Owens, 77, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born August 12, 1939, in Greeley, Nebraska to Roman and Margaret (Czarnik) Kowalski. She graduated from Ord High School with the class of 1957, and went on to continue her education at Lincoln General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1960. Julie was united in marriage to Roger B. Owens on November 20, 1959, in Ord, Nebraska. Three children were blessed to this marriage; Chandra, RoxAnne, and Tobin. The family settled in Lexington where Julie worked as a nurse at the Lexington Community Hospital, and Westside Care Home until 1971, when she received her certification to sell insurance. She assisted Roger in their insurance business for over 40 years. Always an advocate for her community, Julie was involved with the Lexington Housing Authority for 18 years, was a State Commissioner for 8 years, and was honored with Commissioner of the Year in Kearney in 2013. She volunteered with VITA, an income tax assistance program for 26 years, and delivered Meals-on-Wheels for many years. A member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Julie served as a Eucharistic minister and on the Altar Society. Her passions included being a season ticket holder for her beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers, as a matter of fact, she loved all football. She enjoyed caring for the elderly, traveling, belonged to two bridge groups, spending time with friends, especially her Wednesday Lunch Bunch, but, her greatest passion were her grandchildren. She just loved people, and people loved her. Julie is survived by her children; Chandra (Gregg) Baumann of Omaha, Nebraska, RoxAnne (Kory) Koenig of Papillion, Nebraska, and Tobin (Amy) Owens of Lexington, Nebraska; six grandchildren; Bruce & Emma Baumann, Matthew & Catherine Koenig, and Abigail & Griffin Owens; four brothers; Vern (Norma) Kowalski of Grand Island, Nebraska, Dwayne (Monica) Schamp or Ord, Nebraska, Leonard (Barb) Schamp of Alda, Nebraska, and Frank (Barb) Schamp of Kennewick, Washington; two sisters; Ruth (Elliott) Sagehorn of Ogallala, Nebraska, and Maxine (Jon) Peters of Brewster, Nebraska; also surviving are nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Julie was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Alvin Schamp; husband, Roger on July 22, 2016; brother, Bill; and nephew, Troy. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, February 13, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church with Reverends Neal Nollette and Paul Colling concelebrating. Visitation will be Sunday, February 12, 2017, from 4-6 p.m. with Wake Service to follow at 6 p.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Lexington. Julie will be interred next to Roger in the Arcadia Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 13th , in Arcadia, Nebraska. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude’s Children Hospital or Lexington Community Foundation. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is assisting the family with arrangements.
