Edwin Joseph Gruntorad, 87, of Overton, Nebraska, died Sunday, November 13, 2016, at Plum Creek Healthcare Community in Lexington. He was born September 3, 1929, in Elm Creek, Nebraska, to James J. and Anna (Thinnes) Gruntorad. He grew up between Elm Creek and Overton, and moved to Overton right after returning from the military. He served his country during the Korean Conflict in the United States Army where he served in Germany. Edwin was united in marriage to Isabel Streit on April 7, 1951, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Overton. Four children were blessed to this marriage; Dan, Mary Ann, Tim, and Kathy. The family lived in Overton where Edwin worked for Progress Products as their Field Manager in Overton, then worked for Simplot in Overton, and retired from Coop. Edwin was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, VFW, a past member of the Overton School Board and Overton Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed hunting, especially Elk hunting, playing cards, cribbage, horse racing, and being with his family, especially the grandkids and great-grandkids. He had a great sense of humor, enjoyed a good story, and loved life. Survivors include his wife Isabel Gruntorad of Kearney, Nebraska; children; Dan Gruntorad of Overton, Nebraska, Mary Ann (Loyd) Hickey of Overton, Nebraska, Tim (Toni) Gruntorad of Kearney, Nebraska, and Kathy (Doug) Drew of Riverdale, Nebraska; ten grandchildren; Joni Thornburg of Gibbon, Nebraska, Tami (Seth) Burkey of Lincoln, Nebraska, Keri Gruntorad of Grand Island, Nebraska, Sarah (Nate) Dillon of Cozad, Nebraska, Rachel (Tate) Pierce of Kearney, Nebraska, Matt (Bevin) Drew of Giltner, Nebraska, Heathe (Heather) Drew of Pleasanton, Nebraska, Casey Drew of Roca, Nebraska, Randy Simonson of San Francisco, California, and Jennifer Simonson of Lincoln, Nebraska; six great-grandchildren; MaKayla, Jackson, Hadley, Anna, Ted, and Macy. Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Tina Gruntorad; and three brothers, Nicholas, James and Leo. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Overton with Reverend Alex Borzych celebrating. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Elm Creek Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 15, 2016, from 6-7 p.m. with Rosary to follow at 7 p.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
