Robert Eugene Reed

Robert Eugene Reed, 83, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at Cozad Community Hospital in Cozad. Bob was born March 20, 1933, on the Tarbell place east of Lexington, Nebraska, to George M. and Edna E. (Courter) Reed. The family then moved to the Rosenberg place east of Lexington, at the fork in the road. At the age of 5 the family moved to the Luckenbill place that dad and mom had bought. He lived there as he grew to manhood. He attended south District #3 country school for 8 years. In 1946, he went to high school, where he graduated from Lexington High School in 1950. It was during this time he was seated by a town girl in the library. One thing led to another and on the 22nd of March, 1953, he was united in marriage to Nola Jones at the United Methodist Church in Lexington. Bob went to work for Dunlap Well Drilling Company in the summer of 1950. By 1952, he had worked up to driller on the test rig. That was an interesting job as sometimes it was colder then all get out. He received his letter to join the Army two days before his wedding. He left for the Army on May 8, 1953. He served at Camp Polk, Louisiana and Fort Riley, Kansas. While there they reactivated the 10th Infantry. He attained the rank of Sgt. While stationed at Fort Riley their first children, Robin Ruth was born. As they went to the hospital he saw a Robin under a bush and knew it was to be a girl. In May of 1953, they returned home and two days later he was drilling wells again. After leaving Dunlap’s, he went to work for Kenneth Friky and hauled the steel out to build the steam plant. When that job ended he went to work for Audrey Crawford for 21 years. During these years the other four children were born. In 1979, they moved to town and he went to work for Fairbanks IHC, and then for Platte Valley Products Dehydrators. In January, 1982, he had his first triple by-pass surgery. In 1994, he had his second triple by-pass surgery. During these years all five children were married and started their families. The couple ended up with ten grandchildren, five boys, and five girls, and ten great-grandchildren. He realized his lifelong dream, a brand new pickup truck in November of 2005. Bob was a member of First United Methodist Church, a past member of District #48 school board from 1962-1975, the American Legion, and Modern Woodmen. He loved woodworking, his passion was farming, but his life was his family. He had a heart of gold, a smile that could light up the room, and never knew a stranger. Rest in Peace, Bob. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Nola of Lexington, Nebraska; his children, Bill and wife Carol Reed of Highland Village, Texas, Robin and husband Dennis Newell of Emporia, Kansas, Mary and husband Dan Luton of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Becky and husband Eric Lowry of Fremont, Nebraska; sisters, Betty Fothergill of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Patricia and husband Tom Rozell of Saratoga, Wyoming; daughter-in-law, Mary Reed of Lexington, Nebraska; ten grandchildren, Rob and wife Emily Brooks of Hastings, Nebraska, Andrew and wife Sarah Brooks of Nashville, Indiana, Reed Huebner of Grand Island, Nebraska, Marci Luton of Chadron, Nebraska, Vince Reed of Denton, Texas, Jennifer Reed of Louisville, Texas, Erica and husband Caleb Hoover of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Ashley Lowry of Lincoln, Nebraska, Adam and wife Elizabeth Reed of Bellevue, Nebraska, and Megan and husband Trevor Pope of Bennett, Nebraska; ten great-grandchildren, Parker, Trevin, Halle, Isaiah, Finley, Hunter, Evan, Jarin, Mason, and Lauren; as also surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; son, Bob; two brothers Tom and Dick, and great-grandson, Corter Huebner. Funeral Services will be Saturday, October 22, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Lexington with Reverend Anne Gahn officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington. Visitation will be held Friday, October 21, 2016, from 5-7 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.
