Clayton Woodrow Todd

Clayton W. Todd, 93, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Saturday, October 20, 2007, at Elwood Care Center in Elwood, Nebraska. He was born November 12, 1913, at Burwell, Nebraska, to William F. and Nettie (Murten) Todd. The family moved to Sumner in 1918, where Clayton helped with the farm for next 22 years. They then moved to Meadville, Missouri where they bought a farm and he met and married Wilma Clement Hatch on November 24, 1941, at St. Joseph, Missouri. Wilma’s first husband died, so he married Wilma with three children; Robert, Franklin and Mary. They couple had one daughter together, Sherry. Clayton joined the United States Army May 18, 1942, where he was a lineman for the telephone and telegraph lines. He also patrolled and guarded military installations. He was Honorably Discharged on October 13, 1945. When the War was over the family moved back to Sumner where Clayton worked for Del Dickerson in his grocery store. In 1950, they moved to Lexington where Clayton went to work for Bill Burhop in his Barber Shop. He completed his barber training in 1949, and owned and operated Todd’s Barber Shop in Loudon’s Men’s Wear from 1980, until retiring in the late 1990’s. Clayton was a barber for more than 50 years. He also helped his brother Loton, running the Drive-In movie theater at Lexington during the 1960’s. He was a member of Parkview Baptist Church, the American Legion, Eagles Club, Lexington Chamber of Commerce and the Plumcreekers Saddle Club. He enjoyed “visiting” at his barber shop and the Grand Generation Center, playing cards, dancing, playing pool and has fond memories of riding his horse with the Plumcreekers. Survivors include two sons: Robert Hatch of Peoria, Arizona Franklin Hatch of The Villages, Florida Two daughters: Mary (Mont) Harkless of Fremont, Nebraska Sherry (Larry) Warner of Lexington, Nebraska Ten grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. Clayton was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Wilma in 1994; two brothers, Loton and Lee; three sisters, Viola, Jesse and Lois and one grandson, Steve Hatch. Services will be held Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at Parkview Baptist Church in Lexington with Pastor John Shields officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 23, 2007, from 6-8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington. Memorials are suggested to the Lexington Grand Generation Center or the Elwood Fire Department. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge of arrangements.
